Caribbean Airlines
Caribbean Airlines no longer fly to Europe due to a deal struck with BA. However they do operate in Canada, flying out of Toronto and in the US flying to Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Philadelphia and New York’s JFK.
The hospitality is wonderfully warm and the atmosphere on board each flight is very friendly. The staff goes the extra mile to provide the service passengers require whether in Economy or Business class.
Business class passengers enjoy the usual extra baggage allowance, priority booking and check-in as well as business lounges. There have been complaints about the service at Piarco International Airport, Trinidad, but these are not directed at Caribbean Airlines and are out of their control.
In the Caribbean the airline goes to most of the islands and has flights to both Mont ego Bay and Kingston in Jamaica. It operates out of Port of Spain on Trinidad and serves Nassau (Bahamas), Guyana, Caracas and Suriname as well as other Caribbean islands such as Antigua. In January 2011 it added extra seats to its schedule and in March there are additional flights for the peak time of Carnival season.
There is the Caribbean Club which can be worth joining if you are a frequent flier as it offers members discounts on accommodation at selected hotels in the Caribbean area. Members can also get a 10% reduction on goods purchased at Piarco International Airport on Trinidad.
The Caribbean Airlines fleet consists of Boeing 737-800s so passengers cannot expect the added luxury they get onboard more modern aircraft. However the seats are reasonably comfortable and as the company does not offer long-haul flights they are acceptable to the majority of passengers.
The food onboard has a Caribbean flavour as do the drinks and the warm welcome you get from the cabin crew. They are well trained and offer the same respect and level of care to each passenger. One thing about West Indians that I admire is their natural friendliness and joie de vivre and you certainly experience this on a Caribbean Airline flight.
If you are island hopping around the Caribbean then this airline is a good choice as they go to most islands and if you can take advantage of the deals they offer then you will be rewarded.
If you are on a short flight then you will receive a cold sandwich, but don’t turn your nose up at it as the ingredients may surprise you. It will also be served with a smile, and often that’s more than can be said if you travel on some other airlines which are household names.
